UFC 127: BJ Penn Prepares for Fitch By Bringing in Matt Hughes
In less than two weeks, BJ Penn will meet Jon Fitch inside the Octagon in what will be one of the biggest fights of his long MMA career. Fitch is widely considered the No. 2 welterweight in the world and so a victory for BJ would put him very close to rematch with George St-Pierre.
What a lot of people are wondering going into this fight is how BJ Penn is preparing for Jon Fitch. After Penn's second loss to Frankie Edgar, it became apparent that BJ wasn't surrounding himself with the right kind of people to prepare for his fights. Penn was clearly losing the fight and the best advice his corner had to offer in between rounds was "Smash him, BJ." Penn relied far too much on his own natural talent going into that fight and didn't work enough on actual strategy.
Going into his fight with Fitch, it looks as if Penn has learned from his mistakes. BJ brought in welterweight legend Matt Hughes to help him prepare.
While Hughes isn't exactly relevant at welterweight these days, his style is very similar to Fitch's. Both men have decent hands, but do not possess devastating knockout power. Both are excellent wrestlers and rely heavily on their grappling ability to win fights.
Fitch and Hughes do have some differences, however. Hughes has the better submission game and so Penn will likely be ready for any submission Fitch will go for, although Penn's submission defense wasn't really in question to begin with.
Another huge difference is that Hughes is on his way out of the UFC and Fitch is in the prime of his career. Based on that, BJ should expect that Fitch will be stronger than Hughes and will probably have better cardio too.
Although Hughes may not be an exact copy of Fitch, he is definitely one of the best people Penn could have brought in to mimic Fitch's style, as well as help him develop his game plan.
It's great to see that Penn is working hard and developing an intelligent strategy for this fight, rather than relying on his natural ability. But will the hard work pay off? Watch UFC 127 on Feb. 26 to find out.

Georges St-Pierre is ready to retire...Read on for more infro
UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is ready to retire when he's considered the sport's pound-for-pound best.
Don't worry, though. On a special "Primetime" edition of MMAjunkie Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) this past Friday, St-Pierre said he's not quite there yet.
But the traditional reason for sticking around – fame and money – isn't his primary concern. Doing it his way is.
"People are going to be shocked," St-Pierre said of his tentative retirement plan.
St-Pierre (20-2 MMA, 15-2 UFC) currently is in Las Vegas wrapping up a coaching stint on "The Ultimate Fighter 12" opposite top contender Josh Koscheck (15-4 MMA, 13-4 UFC). The two are expected to meet sometime at the end of the year in a traditional season-ending fight between "TUF" coaches.
Beyond that, he's done some additional planning. In fact, St-Pierre said his potential retirement plan recently came about while he was setting goals for his remaining career.
"Growing up in my career, I always fix my goals very high," he said. "And every time I achieve one of my [goals], I fix another goal to reach. It's important as a martial artist [never to be] satisfied because otherwise there is no point to keep doing what you're doing."
As to what goals remain, there are a few. St-Pierre has achieved what he initially set out to do: become a professional fighter, become a UFC fighter, and finally, become a UFC champion.
Being considered the best overall fighter in the world? That's the one goal he thinks currently is unmet.
That doesn't mean he's complacent, of course. In his second run as welterweight champion, St-Pierre has taken on four consecutive contenders and soundly beaten them all. At the end of the year, he will attempt to tie former champion Matt Hughes' record of five consecutive title defenses when he meets Koscheck.
Still, some fans believe St-Pierre already has cleaned out his division. He's already beaten all the division's top contenders – Koscheck, Jon Fitch, Thiago Alves and Dan Hardy – and some point to a middleweight showdown against current champion Anderson Silva as a final hurdle to the pound-for-pound crown. Silva is still widely considered to be the holder of that unofficial title. St-Pierre knows he could snatch it away by beating him.
But St-Pierre said a move up in weight would likely come near the end of his career, and it won't come anytime soon.
"If I go up in weight, it's going to be hard to go down," he said. "If I put on lean muscle like I already did recently ... it's going to be hard to come back down. So it's not like I go up and I go down. I have to be very careful with what I do."
Still, if St-Pierre takes "a couple" of welterweight fights in the next year or two, and if Silva is still the pound-for-pound king at that point, the French-Canadian then would consider moving up to fight him. And if he defeats Silva, that's a win worthy of retirement, he said.
"If one day I fight at 185 pounds for a superfight to know who is the best pound-for-pound in the world, (and) if I reach my goal, then my goal will be reached," St-Pierre said. "There will be no point for me to still compete because I'm not going to have a goal left."
St-Pierre also said he wants to secure his and his family's future before he takes the risk of moving up, though money and fame aren't the driving forces in his career.
"Of course, the money's there," he said. "The difference between me and a lot of fighters ... (is that) a lot of fighters fight for the fame. They fight for the money.
"Yeah, the money is there. It's pleasant. The money is there. It's good that I have this security. I have a lot of money now. It's good. But there is a lot of things I can do outside of mixed martial arts ... because of the name that I reached with MMA, that the UFC helped me to have.
"The fame is the same thing. I didn't have it in the beginning, and now I have it. But if one day I reach my goal of becoming the best pound-for-pound (fighter) of all-time, it will be time for me to retire. But I don't know right now, at 29 years old, if I want to retire. So it's better I have to stick around."

Before he would allow himself to fall victim to Punk’s minions, 2010’s WWE Superstar of the Year caught his opponent with a low blow. The shot got Cena disqualified and left Punk reeling.
The remainder of The New Nexus charged down the entrance ramp. As Mason Ryan attended to his boss, Michael McGillicutty and David Otunga took aim at Cena. Before they could avenge Punk, however, Jerry “The King” Lawler handed Cena a steel chair, which he used to clobber the two Nexi and send a clear message to The Second City Savior: John Cena isn’t about to go without a fight.
Alberto Del Rio def. Santino Marella (WATCH | PHOTOS)
Alberto Del Rio outlasted 39 other Superstars to prevail in the Royal Rumble Match. The man he sent over the top rope to win, WWE Tag Team Champion Santino Marella, wanted a second chance. Unfortunately for the Italian, the outcome was similar. Marella ended up tapping out to the Mexican elitist.
King Sheamus vs. David Otunga ended in a No Contest (WATCH | PHOTOS)
CM Punk continues to prove himself a shrewd operator. Prior to a match pitting David Otunga against King Sheamus, the head of The New Nexus presumably orchestrated a scuffle between the Irishman and Mark Henry by planting false accusations between the two. In addition to shielding his disciple from potential harm, the move also sparked a blow-up between The World’s Strongest Man and The Celtic Warrior, who was reeling from the effects of The World’s Strongest Slam.
Jerry "The King" Lawler & U.S. Champion Daniel Bryan def. WWE Champion The Miz & Ted DiBiase (WATCH | PHOTOS)
If WWE Champion The Miz thinks he can coast in his title match against Jerry “The King” Lawler at WWE Elimination Chamber, he’d better think again. The WWE Hall of Famer teamed with U.S. Champion Daniel Bryan against Miz & Ted DiBiase. Lawler showed that he remains a force inside the ring when he used his experience to level The “Fortunate Son” for the three-count.
John Morrison def. Michael McGillicutty (WATCH | PHOTOS)
In their effort to weaken each of CM Punk’s Elimination Chamber opponents, The New Nexus scored yet again. This time, it was Michael McGillicutty who tackled the challenge of John Morrison. Although The Shaman of Sexy prevailed, he was ambushed after the bout when The Second City Savior struck him from behind, sprayed a chemical substance in his eyes and kicked him in the head.
Divas Champion Eve, Gail Kim & Tamina def. The Bella Twins & Melina (WATCH | PHOTOS)
The bad blood flowed thick when Divas Champion Eve teamed up with Gail Kim & Tamina to compete against The Bella Twins & Melina. With loads of animosity looming large, it was the recently crowned Divas Champion who secured the win for her team by pinning Melina. Eve's troubles aren't over just yet, though. Next week, the Divas Champion must defend her title against former champion Natalya.
R-Truth def. Mason Ryan by Disqualification (WATCH | PHOTOS)
In the first match of the evening, Nexus strongman Mason Ryan faced off with R-Truth. Ryan showed he possesses both size and sadism. The Welshman refused to release his submission hold, punishing Truth’s legs. His insistence cost Ryan the bout due to disqualification.
The New Nexus attacked Randy Orton (WATCH)
After Randy Orton punted their colleague, Husky Harris, in the skull last week, The New Nexus was hungry for retribution. As a result, the group surrounded The Viper and beat him down mercilessly. The group's leader, CM Punk, then explained why he had cost Orton the WWE Championship at Royal Rumble: He hadn't forgotten that WWE's Apex Predator cost him his World Heavyweight Championship in 2008. However, that was hardly the end of their night.
The anonymous Raw General Manager eschewed the group’s “gang mentality” and announced that members of The New Nexus would compete in individual matches against participants in the upcoming Raw Elimination Chamber Match. The bouts would culminate in a contest between New Nexus leader CM Punk and John Cena.

After months, Mr. McMahon finally made his eagerly-anticipated return to Raw – and it was worth the wait. The Chairman opened the program to inform the WWE Universe that next week, the host of this year’s WrestleMania will be revealed!

WWE Superstars John Cena, The Miz, Mark Henry and Alberto Del Rio, and WWE Diva Eve were also on hand for the announcement.

The Return Of The Undertaker
The undertaker is expected to return to smackdown later this month. Leading into WM, who do you think his opponent will be? The rumors that Sting will be his opponent has pretty much been squashed, and Wade Barrett is currently denying that he was approached for this fight. There are a lot of deserving superstars, aside from the current mainstream Randy Orton, Shameus, ect.. I personally think John Morrison's time has come. He is deserving, hard working and takes pride in being able to put on a great show for the fans, regardless if he gets boo'd or cheered. I also think that a deserving superstar to hold the title, is none of than The Big Show. Not only has he been with the company for a while, he has shown dedication to his in ring persona, and he hasn't been in the mix for the title for quite some time. Who do you think Taker's opponent will be at WM, and do yo u think he will win or lose. With his retirement coming sooner than later, do you think "The Streak" will be broken, or will he retire undefeated at WM?

Will Sting return to the WWE?
Over the past several weeks there have been rumors and speculation that Sting may make an in ring appearance at Wrestlemania XVII. At 51 years old I don't think it would happen, but if this match were against The Undertaker, it would be one hell of a match. The Undertaker is getting up there in age as well, and with his Wrestlemania streak coming to a soon end (Personal Opinion) due to his soon retirement, I'd like to see him pitted against someone such as Sting, Kevin Nash, Booker T, or any of the old timers. The WWE has been quite boring lately, and they need one spectacular card in order to get the ratings they need at WM. Who do you see Undertaker facing at WM? When do you think he will retire? There are already rumors that Edge will be retiring soon, and from what I have been seeing he hasn't been giving 100% in his in ring performances. This could very well be that he don't like the way the WWE is heading with it's planning. My prediction is at WM, all of the young guys will emerge as champions, which brings me to one last question. Why in the hell are they pushing Alberto Del Rio so much?? This guy has one move, which doesn't even seem to do much damage to anyone, although everyone who has been put in his armbar has tapped out....

UFC 126
With the defeat of Belfort at UFC 126 one has got to wonder if there is anyone worthy of stepping into the ring with Anderson Silva. George St. Pierre will be the next challenger for Silva's title, and I for one am anticipating this match. With both competitors trained so well to take punishment as well as they can give it. What are your thoughts and opinions on the upcoming fight? Can St. Pierre give Silva a run for his money, or will he be just another notch on Anderson Silva's belt?
